The MaxxForce DT Engine

The DT has long been known in the industry as "The Legend."  The legend grew from a big idea: bring to the mid-range diesel market traditional big bore features like wet-sleeve design, in-chassis rebuild capability and premium design features.  The resulting durability and performance, providing low cost of ownership and high residual value, drove Class 6-7 truck buyers to make this engine the market share leader for decades.  Diesel Power magazine, in naming the DT one of the "Top 10 Diesel Engines – Ever," summed it up nicely: "Simply put, these are the favorite engines for fleet managers all across America because they run forever, are efficient, make good power for moving freight, and can be rebuilt right in the chassis of the truck… (They) have earned the respect of drivers and operators all over the world."

The MaxxForce 11 Engine

To succeed in a competitive business, you need an engine and an organization behind it that are always performing and working for you. Navistar’s MaxxForce 11 has revolutionized how the world looks at Class 8 commercial diesels. Designed specifically for International® brand heavy vehicles, with a combination of technologically advanced materials and components, these engines deliver outstanding fuel economy, excellent power characteristics, an exceptionally smooth and quiet ride, and high strength without added weight. And they’re backed by the largest dealer and service network in North America.  Those advantages ensure your business will be “Always Performing.”

Power & Performance
  • Outstanding Fuel Economy
  • Excellent Power
  • Driver Comfort
  • Maximum Strength, Maximum Payload
Outstanding Fuel Economy
MaxxForce 11 combines the most advanced engine technologies to deliver more torque and responsiveness at low rpm for outstanding fuel efficiency. A high-pressure common-rail fuel system, dual sequential fixed vane turbos, innovative heat-management system and low-friction design convert the highest percentage of your fuel into power you can use. And that adds up to low cost of ownership.
Excellent Power
MaxxForce 11 uses dual sequential turbochargers to deliver powerful performance from stop light to mountaintop. The smaller, primary turbo responds quickly for immediate take-off at low engine speeds, and the larger, secondary turbo provides peak power at higher speeds and on steep grades. Peak torque is achieved at 1,000 rpm and holds steady to 1,200 rpm, a much lower engine speed than other big bore engines. This means less down-shifting on hills and quicker up-shifts when accelerating.
Technologies responsible:
  • Instantaneous full power at near idle RPM
  • Strong launch performance with first high-pressure turbo
  • Interstage cooler increases air density to second low pressure turbo
  • Second turbo provides boost at higher RPM which delivers the power to get you moving
  • Fewer moving parts mean a lower cost of replacement than variable geometry turbos and sliding nozzle turbos
Key advantages:
  • Peak torque at 1,000 rpm
  • Better response for earlier up-shifts
  • Better lugging for fewer downshifts
Driver Comfort
How can the MaxxForce 11 engine deliver outstanding fuel efficiency, quiet operation and maximum durability? A key component is the industry's first Compacted Graphite Iron block. CGI has at least 75% higher tensile strength, 45% higher stiffness and near double the fatigue strength of gray iron. It carries the load quietly, with less vibration, without weighing you down. Keep in mind when it comes to compected graphite iron it's not just the material, it's also the engineering. The CGI block material allows rib design to reduce engine noise. The block and oil pan mating surface is isolated with a large rubber gasket and flanged bottom block surface. The sound wave transmission is virtually eliminated.
Maximum Strength, Maximum Payload
How can MaxxForce 11 deliver outstanding fuel efficiency, emissions control without SCR, quiet operation and maximum durability? A key component is the Class 8 industry's only CG Iron block. This incredibly strong platform handles the loads that deliver the best fuel combustion and damps vibration and noise. It carries the load without weighing you down. Because CG Iron is so incredibly strong, castings don't have to be as thick and heavy in order to achieve the desired durability required for heavy-duty diesel. This results in up to 500 pounds of weight savings over traditional big bore engines cast from gray iron — which can translate to greater payload and bigger payback.
